Defence and War

As with any small isolated colony established in the early 19th Century, defence was considered paramount. A military presence has existed in the islands since Governor Moody’s early administration. Volunteer forces and group have developed to protect the Islands and respond to external threats from the Crimean War, to World War I and World War II.

Ordinance No 7 of 1920 an Ordinance to provide for the establishment of a Defence Force was issued 13 December 1920. The Falkland Islands Defence Force (FIDF) is still active today and this section includes information on their development.
