Dependencies of the Falkland Islands
From 1908 until 1962 these consisted of South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, South Orkney Islands, South Shetland Islands and Graham Land. On the 3rd of March 1962 the South Orkney Islands, South Shetland Islands and Graham Land became part of the newly defined British Antarctic Territory and on the 3rd of October 1985 South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands were also grouped separately from the Falkland Islands. While the British Antarctic Territory is now administered from Britain, the Governor of the Falkland Islands is also the Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and the administration of these is based in Stanley.
Most records held relate to South Georgia. They concern whaling and sealing activity, the issue of licenses, and the civil administration established at King Edward Point in 1912 consisting of a magistrate, customs office, radio station, meteorological station and post office. From these offices activities at the various whaling stations around the Island were supervised. There was also a government naturalist stationed there together with the shore base and laboratories for the Discovery Expeditions.
For the other territories without permanent populations, relevant holdings consist of administrative records, mainly to do with whaling and sealing. A collection is also held of more recent miscellaneous material relating to the area such as the British Antarctic Survey Bulletin and scientific reports.
