Falkland Islands News Weekly & Church Bulletin

 

Introduction

After the Falkland Islands Government closed down The Penguin on 30 June 1938 the Christ Church Cathedral took over the printing press and office. The Falkland Islands News Weekly & Church Bulletin was produced from June 1938 by the Reverend G Kenneth Lowe, chaplain of Christ Church Cathedral. This weekly newspaper was published on Thursdays and in addition to church sermons and news covered local news such as government notices, social events, arrivals & departures, shipping, births, deaths & marriages and later, war news.

Period Covered: June 1938 to 30 December 1943. Status: Incomplete set.

Missing:

  • 1938 - Vol 1, issues 1 & 2.
  • 1941 - Vol 3, issues 27-28; Vol 4, issues 1-6, 8-9, 13-14, 16-26.
  • 1942 - Vol 5, issues 11 & 13.

Falkland Islands Magazine 1917-1933

 

Introduction

The Falkland Islands Magazine (later called the FI Magazine & Church Paper), was started by Dean Brandon in May 1889. This monthly periodical is a comprehensive record of social history in the Islands covering notable events and a wide range of local news such as baptisms, births, deaths, marriages, bazaars, sports and shipping movements. Photocopies of some of the earliest Magazines are also held in the Community Library and the Museum.

Period Covered: January 1917 to December 1933.

Status: Incomplete set – missing June 1930-November 1932 inclusive.

Introduction

Colonial Annual Reports

 

Introduction

These printed booklets were produced by the British Government for each of their overseas possessions and were originally based on the Blue Books*.  They contain summaries of statistics and activities for the Colony and Dependencies over the relevant period. Production of the reports was suspended during World War II.  

The last annual report was produced in 1949 and thereafter until 1975 they were biennial reports. The reports were illustrated with black and white photographs from 1947 onwards.

Period Covered: 1887 to 1938; and 1947 to 1974/75. 

Status: Complete

The Colonial Annual Reports for the Falkland Islands can also be accessed in the National Archives, London, England.

* The Blue Books (named after the blue paper the forms were printed on) were produced locally annually and contain statistical records for the Falkland Islands.  The Blue Books list names, salaries and dates of appointment of government employees and information on trade, shipping, land use, schools and local organisations.  The Blue Books for the Falkland Islands can be accessed online at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.fk/online-collections/government/blue-books. They may also be accessed in the National Archives, London, England.
