Peat and Oil

Peat has been used as a source of fuel used in the Islands since the first settlers arrived. It was one of the key factors that led Governor Moody to move the main settlement from Port Louis to Stanley. There was an abundance of peat around Stanley and in Moody’s notes for the development of the area, he noted that peat was within 200 to 300 yards from every man’s house.

The government records and correspondence provide a snapshot in time for how peat soon became part of the community’s daily life and how it was considered as a source of economic development for the Islands.
