Passages and Passengers

Introduction

The Falkland Islands Company Limited purchased their first vessel in 1852 as part of their Royal Charter to provide a regular postal service.  The Amelia, a 150 ton brigantine under Captain Bracey Robson WILSON, arrived in Stanley 1 July 1852 nine days out from Montevideo with general cargo and 19 passengers.  The Falkland Islands Company owned a number of vessels over the subsequent years and continued to carry passengers, mainly between Stanley and Montevideo and Stanley and Punta Arenas.  They also provided a mail, freight and passenger service around the Falkland Islands.  Some of the passenger books and lists have survived and scans of the earliest are below.

FIC- Administration

Introduction

The Falkland Islands Company Limited was formed in January 1851 to purchase Samuel Fisher Lafone’s rights and interests in the land and wild cattle in the southern portion of East Falkland, later known as Lafonia. A preliminary meeting was held 30 April 1851 to discuss the purchase. The Charter of Incorporation was signed 23 December 1851 and the Deed of Settlement signed 10 January 1852. The new company was run by a board of directors in London aided by a Colonial Manager in Stanley. Books of records were kept in both places.
