Introduction

With the changing of the Government Archives to a National Archives in 2010 the National Archivist started collecting records from the private sector and individuals which fit within the accession policy of the new Archives. One sector of major importance is the farming industry. 

Up until the establishment of an Interim Fishery Conservation Zone in 1987 farming was the dominant industry in the Falkland Islands during the 19^th and 20^th Centuries.  The Falkland Islands used to have a concentrated pattern of land ownership and by 1950; not counting the outlying islands, the agricultural land of East and West Falkland was split between only 17 owners. With the breakup of the large stations into smaller farms from the late 1970s to the early 1990s many of the farm records were taken away overseas or destroyed. A large percentage of the surviving records that had been kept in the Islands have since been donated to the National Archives.  In recent years a small number of those records that were taken overseas have been returned to the Islands and lodged in the National Archives.

Farm records are a valuable social history of how farming evolved over the years, the immigrant and local workers and their contribution to the growth and development of the Islands as well as giving a glimpse of the day-to-day running of the sheep stations and the lives of the people who lived and often died on them.

Agriculture - Farm Records (Non-Govt) Database

This database contains a listing of the various non-government farming files and documents held. For ease of use the records have been sorted into categories: FARM RECORDS (NON-GOVT) and then into sub-categories.  These farm records are mainly from the 20^th Century but with some that start as early as 1861. The database will be updated from time to time as new accessions are added.

NB: The Falkland Islands Company Limited records form a substantial collection in their own right and are under the separate heading FALKLAND ISLANDS COMPANY LTD COLLECTION.

Introduction

When the French withdrew from Port Louis in 1767 they left behind cattle and horses which survived and multiplied. By 1842 when a civil administration was established there were considerable herds of wild cattle.  The land however, was better suited to sheep farming.

In the census of 31 March 1843 a total of 312 sheep were recorded: Governor Moody 22; Antonina Roxa 40; and John Whitington 250. Of these 200 Lincolns and 12 Leicesters had been imported from England with the remainder from the River Plate.  Unfortunately scab and foot rot were also introduced and by 1846 there were only 100 sheep. 

The Falkland Islands Company Limited was formed in 1851 and among the new company’s objectives under the Royal Charter dated 10 January 1852 was the development of sheep farming.

South American sheep did not adapt well to the climate so experiments were carried out with various breeds from England. By 1860 there were approximately 10,000 sheep on East Falkland.  West Falkland was opened up to farming in 1867 and in less than five years there were approximately 30,000 sheep recorded.  Experimentation and importation of rams continued and in the 1890s rams were being imported from New Zealand.  Professionals were also employed to improve stock, farming methods and pasture.  To date sheep farming continues to dominate with the majority of farm land given over to it.

Introduction

The first Wool Press was published quarterly by the Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC) in conjunction with the Agricultural Research Centre (ARC) and only four issues were printed from June 1985 to May 1986.

It was relaunched in September 1989 by the Department of Agriculture.  A farming orientated periodical it covers a wide range of topics of interest to those in farming as well as the wider community.

The Archives holds a complete set of the Wool Press.
