The Warrah and Wildlife Conservation in the Falkland Islands

Introduction

The Warrah, the journal of the Falkland Islands Trust, UK, was first issued in 1981.

The Falkland Islands Trust, UK merged with the Falkland Islands Foundation early in 1991 and a formal launch of Falklands Conservation was held in London on 1 August 1991.  Falklands Conservation issued their first newsletter in November 1991.

In October 2001 the name of the periodical was changed from the Warrah to Wildlife Conservation in the Falkland Islands and it was issued as a glossy magazine full of colour photographs.

Both publications deal with conservation issues in the Falkland Islands.

Natural History- Penguins and Penguining

Introduction

An iconic part of the Falkland Islands, penguins have been both exploited and protected over the years since the first arrival of people.  Nowadays they are fully protected by law and annually attract large numbers of scientists and tourists.

Louis de Bougainville, leader of the French settlers in 1764, deliberately fired Long Island in Berkeley Sound, killing ‘upwards of 200 penguins’, in the mistaken belief that he was destroying ‘useless herbage’.  [Dom Pernety]  Around the same time penguin eggs were being collected for food on Saunders Island.

From the late 18th Century penguins were boiled down in try pots for their oil.  Ordinance No 2 of 1864 prohibited the destruction of penguins for their oil.

Marooned Captain, Charles Barnard, recorded collecting Macaroni penguin eggs on New Island from 3rd to 7th December 1812.  He collected enough for four months which he knew was as long as they stayed good.   Settlers continued to collect penguin eggs and by the early 20th century eggs were being collected in vast numbers for human consumption.

The Penguin Regulations No 189 of 1914 introduced licences to control egg collection and Ordinance No 9 of 1914, the Preservation of Penguins amending previous ordinances was passed.

Natural History- Seals and Sealing

Introduction

The first recorded cargo of sealskins and seal oil to be exported from the Falkland Islands was by Louis Bougainville and other French settlers at Port Louis in 1766. By 1774 mixed whaling and sealing voyages were being made by crews from the United States, soon to be followed by British vessels.

The first sealing license was issued in 1840 by Lieutenant John Tyssen, the Naval Officer in Charge of the Falkland Islands, for the rookery off Volunteer Point. Despite measures to try to control the wanton destruction of the seal rookeries in subsequent years the herds were severely depleted by poaching.  In 1881 the Seal Fishery Ordinance was passed to help with the recovery of the seal colonies so that a domestic sealing industry could be established.

Natural History- Whales and Whaling

Introduction

By 1774 mixed whaling and sealing voyages were being made by crews from the United States, soon to be followed by British vessels. New Island was a favourite haunt of whalers and sealers from the 18th Century onwards and this is reflected in place names such as Coffin’s Harbour (now known as Ship Harbour) and Coffin Island after one or more of the whaling captains of this name; Hooker’s Harbour (now Settlement Harbour) likely after a Captain as the name pre-dates Joseph HOOKER, Barnard Passage after Captain Barnard who was marooned with four other men in the winter of 1813 for nearly eighteen months or after his father who had visited previously; and Sabina Point after the Norwegian barque Sabino.

In 1908 Christian Salvesen & Company Ltd built a whaling station on New Island and fishing began 16 January 1909 and ran until 1915. In 1916 the station was dismantled and most of the equipment taken to South Georgia.  A Post Office was constructed on the North West corner of the whaling station in 1909 for the use of the whalers.  It was closed 1 June 1917.
