Falklands Business Bulletin and Chamber of Commerce Bulletin

Introduction

The Falkland Islands Traders Association was formed in 1984.  They were subsequently reformed as the Association of Businesses in the Falkland Islands in 1987 and they issued the first Falklands Business Bulletin in March 1992.  After three issues the title was changed to Association of Businesses in the Falkland Islands Bulletin.

In May 1993 the Association of Businesses in the Falkland Islands became the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce and they issued their first Bulletin the same month.

The Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce Bulletins cover topics of interest to their members, services available, job shop, business advice and contact details of businesses with brief descriptions of their products and/or services.

From 1999 the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce Bulletin became an email publication to members.

Maps and Plans

Introduction

The Jane Cameron National Archives has a large holding of maps and plans, many of them unique.  Work on processing and listing these records is still ongoing as there have been a large number of donations since the task was first started.

The following photographic catalogues have been produced for reference and security purposes and to reduce file size the individual images are not of a high quality. They are not a complete representation of all of the holdings of the Archives and will be added to from time to time.

Discovery Expeditions

Introduction

At the turn of the 19th Century the waters around the Dependencies of the Falkland Islands were rich in whales and on 16 November 1904 Carl Anton Larsen, a Norwegian whaler, founded Grytviken Whaling Station on South Georgia and ‘modern’ commercial whaling operations rapidly developed.  By the 1912-13 season, the whaling industry in the Dependencies had become the largest in the world and there were 21 whale catchers in South Georgia waters and 32 around the South Shetlands.

Almost from the beginning, the Falkland Islands Government controlled the industry with a system of leases and licenses which were given legal form in the Whale Fishery Ordinance of 1908.  However, this was not considered enough therefore the Falkland Islands Government sought to prevent waste and over exploitation.  The first was easy to solve but data for the second was scant.  The problem had to be shelved during World War I but in 1920 the Inter-Departmental Committee on Research and Development in the Dependencies of the Falkland Islands published a report and the Discovery Investigations, named after the first research vessel, were the outcome of that report.

The archives also hold the 37 volumes and charts of the Discovery Reports, the published findings of the series of surveys which began in the 1920's.

Stamps

Introduction

The first Falkland Islands’ stamps were issued in June 1878.  The first internal airmail was carried in 1934 by the catapulted aircraft from HMS Exeter but a regular service was not introduced until 1948.  Until the introduction of a regular external mail service in 1971 overseas airmail was delivered by sea to South America for onward transmission by air.

Falkland Islands postage stamps were used in the Dependencies from 1909 until they issued their own stamps in 1944.

The Archives hold stamp designs, essays and proofs, correspondence between the Crown Agents and Government on stamp issues and the background to the development of telecommunications over the past 100 years since the introduction of wireless telegraphy in 1912.

Stamp issues, post and telegraph statistics are included in the Blue Books.
