Introduction
Lieutenant Richard Clement Moody, Royal Engineer, was appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Falkland Islands in 1841. He set sail from England 9 October 1841 on board the brig Hebe, accompanied by a party of Royal Sappers & Miners carefully chosen for their varying skills. Three of the men were accompanied by their families and they elected to settle and descendants of James Biggs and Thomas Yates are still in the Falkland Islands.
In 1849 military pensioners from Chelsea and Greenwich Hospitals arrived with their families on board the Victory. Eight of these men still have descendants in the Falkland Islands.
In 1857 it was decided to form a garrison company consisting of an officer and 30-35 non-commissioned married officers and privates of good conduct and not less than 15 years service, their engagement to be for 6 years. The men and their families arrived 12 January 1858 on board the Ealing Grove
In 1863 the Admiralty ordered a party of Royal Marines to be stationed in the Falkland Islands and on 8 January 1864 1 officer & his wife, 20 men, 6 women, 8 children, RN surgeon, wife, child & female servant and 1 army surgeon arrived on board the Velocidade to form a permanent land-based garrison. The Marine Detachment remained until the establishment of a civilian police force in 1878.
From 1964 to 1982 a Royal Marine garrison, Naval Party 8901, maintained a continuous presence in the Falkland Islands.
